Wine Review: Retrospective Tasting: This is one of the most impressive old wines we have covered in a long while. This cloudy and medium garnet colored Rhone grape blend from the Tablas Creek opens with a black cherry and cedar bouquet with hints of spice. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with very nice medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced and savory. The flavor profile is blend of cedar, anise, meat drippings with hints of clove gum and boysenberry. The finish is dry and its tannins last for a very long time. The Tasting Panel would pair this red blend with a charcuterie platter or prime rib. Enjoy – KWGTP (While this wine is not available for purchase. It is and was a treat. If you have some in your cellar, drink it now and enjoy it while it is showing at a very high level!)

Winemaker Notes: The 2005 Esprit de Beaucastel is dark black, red in color, with a rich briary nose of black cherry, plum and rare steak, overlaid with sweet spices and mocha. The elegant, layered palate shows explosive fruit, with smoky and meaty flavors. Ripe tannins provide structure. The long finish reveals mineral and black cherry notes. The wine is showing remarkably well now but should evolve elegantly in bottle for 10-15 years or longer.
