Wine Review: Sticking to the tried and true, the 2013 Simi Chardonnay is your typical California Chardonnay. The nose is abundant with toasted coconut, creme brulee, sweet tropical fruits, and hints of dried apricots. The palate has a bit more appeal to it as the flavors aren't as intense as the nose and lead to a softer finish. The tropical and candied fruit theme is still prominent but is laced with hints of cooking spices and baked apples. The finish is medium in length, but the beauty here is the soft acidity that cleans the palate leaving you refreshed and not tired. If anything this wine is a testament to Simi's dedication to quality and consistency. - Nicolay
Winemaker Notes: The hue of this wine is brilliantly clear, golden straw with glimmers of golden light—a color that dramatically sets the stage for what is to come. The nose is similarly demonstrative, with expressive tropical notes of mango, delicate pear, and bright stone fruit. Lifted aromatics of citrus, lightly spiced with toasty oak and hints of buttery cream add a savory character. It all comes together on the palate with well-defined, fresh, forward flavors of nectarine, peach, and lemon lifted by a lightly toasted and warm oak character. The oak incorporates sweet vanilla, hazelnut, nutmeg, and smoky bacon characteristics, balanced with a delicate, zesty, lemony finish. Enjoy this 2013 Chardonnay by serving it with spaghetti alla carbonara, or with garlic grilled prawns.
