Wine Review: This opaque and very dark colored Charbono from Napa took a while to open up, but when it did, it evolved into an interesting and very complex wine. It displays a fragrant red currant bouquet with a hint of pomegranate. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, balanced, and very easy to drink. The flavor profile is a mild red currant with notes of black plum and a hint of black cherry, subtle minerality and old oak towards the end. The finish is dry and its gentle mild tannins are friendly. This wine is very food friendly and would pair well with thyme seasoned pork tenderloin. Enjoy - Ken
Winemaker Notes: Charbono is one of the lost grape varieties – almost. Recent reports indicate there are only about 40 acres of this variety in production, most in Napa county. The 2009 vintage's inky dark purple appearance is the first indication of thorough ripeness. Grape berry jam aromas and flavors spread evenly across the palate. Ripeness and brightness together, tannins silky sofy, and a nicely balanced, tangy acidity resolve in a long flavorful finish.
