Wine Review: This medium purple colored Malbec from Red Schooner opens with an oak and blackberry pie bouquet with hints of black cherry, black raspberry and cola. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, round, smooth and has full palate coverage. The flavor profile is a candied black cherry and ripe blueberry blend with integrated soft oak and minerality. We also detected hints of oolong tea. On the finish, its fruit flavors and supple tannins linger for quite some time. The Panel would pair this Malbec with an herb encrusted rack of lamb or with a black truffle butter filet mignon. Enjoy – KWGTP
Winemaker Notes: Grapes for this Malbec are grown in the Andes Mountains of Argentina and transported to Caymus, where we use our winemaking techniques to create a style that is dense, dark and supple. Falling outside standard labeling rules, Red Schooner does not include a vintage date but is known by the voyage from which it traveled (Voyage 8 is the 2018 vintage). A vibrant cherry red, the Voyage 8 opens with a warm, alluring nose. Aromas of ripe plums mix with the rustic scents of the high desert scrub brush, wild sage, saddle leather, the smokiness of a campfire, and a hint of pomace. The palate is silky and smooth, with lush plums and grippy tannins that touch the side of the tongue. An earthy character of leather and cooking over an open fire carries through to the long finish, whose fruit tapers off and yields to soft toasted wood tannins.
