Wine Review: This dark purple colored Zinfandel opens with an attractive musty and earthy bouquet that includes ripe cherries, new leather, vanilla-oak and herbal notes. The full body is smooth and sweet on the palate. Initially this is a powerful Zinfandel which may be due to the aging in bourbon barrels. After decanting for an hour or two it smooths out and balances nicely. As noted the bourbon barrels do provide some slight heat but the tannins and acidity are even and balanced. The flavor profile includes sweet cherry, plum, vanilla-oak and a touch of black pepper and herbs. The finish is a gratifying dry dark chocolate that fades away pleasantly. I would pair this Zinfandel with sweet smoked baby back ribs. – Joe
