Wine Review: This very dark purple colored Zinfandel from Mauritson was the winner of our recent big blind tasting. It opens with a fragrant boysenberry bouquet with a touch of blackberry, strawberry, and smoky oak. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, nicely balanced, and quite smooth. The flavor profile is a very tasty mild blueberry with nicely integrated old oak and dark cherries. We also detected a dash of black pepper. The finish is dry and its fine tannins are a touch sticky. Yet at the same time they are elegant and land softly. The panel suggested pairing this food friendly Zin with filet mignon. Enjoy - KWGTP
Winemaker Notes: If 2008 was the vintage to forget, than 2009 is the vintage to remember. The nose is full of dark fruits and a complex array of brooding flavors. Aromas of blackberry, minerals, cracked pepper, blueberry pie, and sweet oak mingle harmoniously. The front palate is full of ripe and juicy tannins. This Zinfandel has plenty of structure for those of you who would like to lay it down. However, the tannins are broad shouldered without sharp edges for those who want to drink it now. The finish persists long after the last sip is gone; a combination of the structure and balanced acidity that have become a Mauritson hallmark. Please enjoy the 2009 Dry Creek Zinfandel over the next 6-8 years.
