Wine Review: This dark ruby colored Mencia opens with a wet stone and ripe blackberry bouquet with hints of potting soil. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is round and rustic. The flavor profile is an extracted blackberry and graphite blend with notes of oak, black tea, black pepper. I also detected hints of black licorice and loam. The finish is very dry and its sticky tannins build-up and will settle down if you decant it. As result, I would recommend decanting this wine before serving it with a Brazilian Alcatra steak. Enjoy - Ken
Winemaker Notes: What is fascinating about such a representative Bierzo is how it reflects the Mencía grape: Toast, dark chocolate and liquorice flavors frame the black cherry and plum fruit in this expressive red, accented by mountain herb and mineral notes. The wine reflects Bierzo's remarkable conflation of fruit, flowers, and herbs, with integrated tannins and acidity.
