Wine Review: This midnight purple colored Zinfandel from Limerick Lane is initially a full throttle "Old School" offering. It opens with a very fragrant ripe blackberry bouquet with hints of violets, pomegranate, and clay. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is bright, round, juicy and very fruit forward. The flavor profile is a boysenberry pie and stewed black plum blend with notes of mild loam and rhubarb. I also detected hints of flinty minerality, anise and a touch of black tea. The finish is dry, and its fruit flavors and acidity are quite lengthy. If you have the patience, decant this wine for a long while as the oxygen aeration brings out the best in this wine. The fruit settles and it smooths out into an exceptional offering. If you can't decant it for a while pair this initially fruity Zin with your favorite pulled pork recipe. However, after decanting or on day two it would go perfectly with a filet mignon. Enjoy – Ken
Winemaker Notes: (Planted 1942) With yields so low in 2021, it was nearly impossible to find any Zinfandel for purchase, let alone any of high quality. So, when I heard that the Maffei family might have a few tons available, we jumped at the opportunity. Walking the gnarly head-trained vineyard planted a hundred years ago and tasting the delicious fruit from the site, we couldn’t believe our good fortune. During fermentation and barrel aging, it became clear that this vineyard had something special to offer and deserved to be highlighted as a vineyard designate. It produced a classically styled Russian River Zinfandel with brambly fruit and floral aromas, modest tannins, and mouth-watering acidity on the finish.
