Wine Review: This dark ruby colored Plavac Mali from Croatia opens with a fragrant green stem and plum bouquet with an attractive hints of cinnamon, wild strawberry, and new leather. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with bright medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is round, a little dusty from the tannins, and the fruit is juicy. The flavor is a strawberry and peach blend with notes of stony minerality and oak. We also detected hints of plump raisins, tea, and cinnamon. This finish is very dry, and its monster dusty tannins are noticeably present. This wine will need to be decanted and served with something with fat. Perhaps an 80% mix juicy burger off the grill. Enjoy – Ken & Mark
Winemaker Notes: A full-bodied, robust quality Plavac Mali, this remarkable wine is an unusual collaboration of the 7 wineries of the Komarna appellation, and blends Plavac Mali made in the same style by different wineries. This wine is produced exclusively for Croatian Premium Wine Imports and is available only in the US. The first sniff of this wine tells us there is something interesting inside, with aromas of blackberry, plum, pepper and dark chocolate. With the first sip come very silky tannins with a little touch of vanilla. This wine is drinkable after 4-5 minutes. After 10 minutes comes the typical jammy raisin flavor of Plavac Mali. Aging in oak barrels for 24 months contributes nice flavors of sweet tobacco with vanilla. Pairs well with robust cheese, venison, and steaks.
