Wine Review: The 2007 Heretic is a very dark opaque purple colored Petite Sirah. It opens with an attractive and aromatic black raspberry bouquet with hints of tobacco, mint, and plum. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, very nicely balanced, coats the mouth, and is very juicy. The flavor profile is a blend of ripe blackberry and boysenberry with notes of black pepper and licorice. The finish is dry and its fine tannins are very persistent. This year's vintage is more of a fruit bomb as opposed to past offerings of this wine. I did find that with some air, it is one of the most elegant and refined Petite Sirah's we have tried recently. It is quite food friendly and it would pair quite nicely with a herb encrusted lamb. So decant it in the near term and enjoy. – Ken
Winemaker Notes: Monster OLD Vine Petite Sirah from Paso calcarious soils build more fruit into the mid palate than the volcanic soils do. Controlled extraction helps keep the monster friendly. Aged for 16 months in 100% French Oak Big nose of cherry and berry fruit. Rich strawberry fruit with tobacco and mocha wrapped in massive structure. Leads into a honey toasted oak finish.
