Wine Review: This ruby colored Zinfandel from Dutton-Goldfield was well received by the panel. It opens with a fragrant strawberry licorice bouquet with hints of cherry-coke and bay leaf. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, slightly and juicy. The flavor profile is a strawberry and red raspberry blend with hints of red plum and pepper. The finish is quite dry and its dusty tannins stick around for a while. The panel suggested pairing this Zin with Chinese boneless pork ribs or French onion soup. Enjoy – Ken
Winemaker Notes: We're thrilled to have our Morelli Zinfandel back as a single-vineyard offering for 2012, after a year hiatus. The 2012 vintage is a wonderful reflection of its place, with the aromas and flavors painting a picture of the berries, trees and flowers you pass on a walk down Morelli Lane. The friendly and opulent nose greets you with an immediate impression of brambly blackberry. As you swirl and contemplate this summer berry patch, the floral notes of rosehips come up, underlain with layers of redwood forest, clove and pepper. The mouth is sweet, rich and creamy, with the classic creme-de-cassis the wine is known for, dusky and spicy, but with a lift of bright strawberry. The extended finish is fresh and vibrant, encouraging the next sip. Few Zins are as versatile with food as this one. It’s perfect with summer grilling fare, and also a wonderful pairing for salty cheeses, or just a late night indulgence with special friends.
