Wine Review: This pale straw-colored "GG" level Riesling from Dr. Loosen opens with a very aromatic pineapple, anise Italian cookie, and ginger bouquet with hints of pear, wet slate, and beeswax. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with integrated plus acidity. The mouthfeel is round and very smooth. It is also initially quite bright and fresh. The flavor profile is a lime, golden delicious apple, and saline blend with notes of chalky minerality and white peach. We also detected some hints of mango, cardamom, and white pepper. The finish is rather dry and refreshing. We would pair this Riesling with a grilled swordfish steak or with a Portuguese seafood stew. Enjoy – Ken & Mark
Winemaker Notes: A sleek and refined dry Riesling from 100-year-old, ungrafted vines in the red slate soil of the "little staircase" vineyard. The Erdener Treppchen vineyard produces wines that are muscular and complex, with an intense mineral finish. Grosses Gewächs (GG) simply means "great growth" and is the designation for an estate’s best dry wine from a Grosse Lage (grand cru) vineyard. From a parcel of extremely old vines ("alte Reben"), this wine was kept on the full lees for a year before bottling. The extended maturation time allows the wine to develop greater texture and a natural harmony.
