Wine Review: This dark maroon colored Tempranillo from Diaz Bayo opens with a black currant bouquet with a hint of prune and oak. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, slightly acidic, juicy and really coats your mouth. The flavor profile is an extracted black raspberry with notes of oak and black plum. I also detected hints of clove, raisin, black cherry, and black pepper. The finish is dry and its moderate tannins show nice length. This Tempranillo also benefits from some air, so I would decant it and pair it with crispy duck breast. Enjoy - Ken
Winemaker Notes: 100% Tempranillo from three high elevation parcels: El Miron at 920 meters with 60 year old vines on clay soils; El Gallo at 870-910 meters with 30 year old vines on limestone soils; Las Fuentes Viejas at 850 meters with over 80 year old vines on clay and limestone soils. Aged 20 months in French oak, it expresses minerality and lingering black fruit in an extremely terroir-driven and complex style. Reminiscent of the wines that originally impulsed the Ribera del Duero phenomenon!
