Wine Review: This deep garnet colored Malbec from DAOU is a big boy wine. It opens with a blackberry and black olive bouquet with hints of tobacco, red raspberry, and violets. On the palate, this wine is full bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, dense, luscious, and fresh. The flavor profile is a fruit forward extracted blackberry and black raspberry blend with notes of espresso and stone dust. We also detected hints of black pepper, oak, and black licorice. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and its dusty tannins build-up and stick around for a very long time. The Tasting Panel would decant this wine in the near term and drink it while its fruit the ripest. We would pair this impressive Malbec with a pan-seared duck breast with a blackberry bourbon sauce. Enjoy - KWGTP
Winemaker Notes: The 2022 Malbec is selected from Clone 19, grown on DAOU Mountain. Deep red hues reveal hints of blue fruit in the glass. The nose shows rose petal, blackberry, raspberry, and baking spice with suggestions of toffee and tobacco leaf. A full entry fills the mouth with black fruits, cherry, chocolate, and shaved almond, while fresh tannins and balanced acidity carry deep into the finish. An uncommonly complex rendition of Paso Robles Malbec.
