Wine Review: This dark red colored Nerello Mascalese from Sicily opens with a mild Maraschino cherry and faint red raspberry bouquet. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied and smooth, however the tannins drift up early in this wine, making their presence known. The flavor profile a red plum and oolong tea blend with notes of crushed stone minerality and oak. I also detected just a hint of cranberry in the background. The finish is rather dry and its sticky tannins build-up and last for quite a while. I decanted this wine for 30+ minutes, which allowed its full potential to show. I would serve it with a well-marbled ribeye steak. Enjoy – Ken
Winemaker Notes: Alta Mora Etna Rosso is made with 100% Nerello Mascalese grapes. Indigenous to Sicily and the predominant red grape of Mt. Etna. Many wine enthusiasts compare this wine to a Nebbiolo or Pinot Noir. (This one is more like a Nebbiolo, not a Pinot Noir) It is deeply ruby red colored with thick-skins that contribute to the rich fruit, firm tannins and vibrant acidity. It displays spicy pepper aromas with black currant and hints of mountain herbs. The flavors are vibrant and intense spices, herbs and black currant.
