Wine Review: It was two years ago, that I first tried this wine. I had a chance to recently try it again at Grill 23. It keeps getting better and better. It now opens with a pleasant mild ripe apple cider bouquet. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, well balanced, and very tasty. The flavor profile is Anjou pear with a hint of green apple. This wine has aged beautifully and finishes semi-dry. Enjoy - Ken
5/08 - One thing that I learned at a recent tasting of Vouvray wines is that Chenin Blanc from Vouvray can age very nicely. This example from Domaine du Viking really shows that quality. This light gold wine opens with a light honey and almond like bouquet. On the palate, this full bodied wine is rich, creamy, concentrated, and shows off its lush ripe apple flavors. The wine was quite youthful for a wine of its age. The finish was noted as brief. This wine is a nice option to pair with dessert. I was really impressed with its flair for an 18 year old wine. Enjoy – Ken
Winemaker Notes: Every single bunch of grapes on the property is hand-harvested, sorted, de-stemmed, crushed, and fermented in Lionel’s tiny garage cellar, and left to age in 500 litre barrels made of local chestnut (according to Lionel Oak imparts too many unwanted flavors in his wines.) The wines are bottled by hand and sold (for the most part) in Europe, where an admiring clientele waits for months for the new release. He has allocated only a few barrels to the USA.
