Wine Review: This opaque and very dark ruby colored Malbec opens with a fragrant blackberry liquor bouquet with notes wet stone and plum. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, fruit forward and rich. The flavor profile is a mineral infused blackberry with nicely integrated smoky oak. I also detected some mild plum and black currant. The finish is dry and its flavors linger and last for quite a while. This wine improves quite a bit as it releases more of its fruit with a swill and a little air. I would pair this wine with beef bourguignon. Enjoy - Ken
Winemaker Notes: Coquena Malbec is sourced from high altitude Malbec vines (5400 feet above sea level) at the Tolombon Estate, just 7 miles south of Cafayate. The yields are dramatically limited by the extreme conditions. The wine has just a light touch of oak from aging in oak casks previously used by San Pedro de Yacochuya. The black fruit and plum flavors are dense and ripe. The body is medium with good structure and spicy fruit flavors that linger in the mouth.
