Wine Review: This dark ruby colored Syrah from the Sonoma Coast finished in first place in our first Big Blind tasting of Syrah's and Shiraz. It opens with a fragrant blueberry bouquet with hints of toasted oak, vanilla, and anise. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, nicely balanced, and savory. The flavor profile is black currant with notes of blueberry and black pepper. We also detected pleasant hints of anise and oak. The finish is dry and its flavors and moderate tannins linger nicely. The panel suggested pairing this impressive Syrah with a New York strip steak with Bearnaise sauce for dipping or roasted duckling with root vegetables. Enjoy – KWGTP

Winemaker Notes: Our third vintage of this appellation-level Syrah, it's a blend of 57% Shanel Vineyard, 35% Rodgers Creek Vineyard and 8% Cole Creek Vineyard. Shanel being on the eastern, warmer side of Sonoma Mountain, just at the limit of the Sonoma Coast appellation, it provides a richer, fruitier expression of Syrah, while the Rodgers Creek contributes the cool-climate, savory character that to us defines Syrah. This blend combines for a smooth, supple elegant wine which will pair well with grilled sausages, duck breast, roast pork or chicken and any sort of lamb. Co-fermented with 7% Viognier and with 25% whole Syrah clusters, the wine rested sur lies for 24 months in 60% new barrels. Fermentation and malo were both native and the wine was bottled without filtration.
