Wine Review: I usually expect mountain fruit to produce big wines, but this Howell Mountain offering from Nickel and Nickel is rather graceful. It turned out to be my second favorite wine from their 2006 offerings. It is a very dark opaque purple Cab that opens with an attractive and pleasant black cherry bouquet. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, very nicely balanced, and rather elegant. The flavor profile is a dusty black cherry and blueberry blend with a hint of boysenberry. There is also a dash of black pepper and black licorice mixed in to add to the complexity. The finish is dry and its moderate tannins are nicely prolonged. Pair this wine with a filet mignon over the next couple of years. Enjoy - Ken

Winemaker Notes: This 2006 Vogt Cabernet Sauvignon was made in both open-and closed-top tanks, which produced a wine with great concentration. The dark fruit flavors of berry and cassis are intensified by some natural floral and spice nuances. The palate is rich and coating with an intensity that comes from low-production, hillside fruit. Toasty oak integrates well with the firm yet polished tannins that, although approachable now, will resolve with some time in the bottle.
